Not All Bagels Are Created Equal

Grab a bagel, make some maple and 30+ events

Good morning, Quiet Corner! Today is Tuesday 3/11, and that means it’s National Johnny Appleseed Day! Celebrate the legacy of this New England legend by eating a piece of fruit, reading a little bit about the man himself, or deciding what kind of fruit tree you might want to plant when the weather warms up (I’m looking at putting in some paw-paws - look them up!).

In Today’s Quiet Corner Buzz:

  • Signed Book Giveaway📚

  • Bagels. Life. Complete.🥯

  • Maple Madness🍁

Let’s dive in!

Set in Eastern Connecticut, this gripping novel uncovers the forgotten 1820 trial of Yale-educated Reverend Ammi Rogers, accused of seduction and betrayal. Entangled in a scandalous love triangle, his story reveals the real-life scandal behind The Scarlet Letter.

BRIEF BITES

  • Special Ed. - Killingly Public Schools is launching the Therapeutic Academy this fall, aiming to provide in-district special education services and reduce the need for costly out-of-district placements.

  • Retirement - Both Windham and Canterbury made the cut into the top 9 towns for retirement in CT. Check out the full list here.

  • Garden Award - Ladd’s Garden Center in South Windham just sprinkled a little magic on the competition, taking home the Best in Design award at the 43rd CT Flower and Garden Show. Their enchanting fairy garden display wowed judges and visitors alike, proving that a little creativity (and maybe some fairy dust) goes a long way!

THE HIVE’S PICK

Do you love bagels? I do, and one of my favorite spots to head to is Bagel One (351 Boston Post Rd, North Windham). If you’ve lived anywhere near Windham, you’ve undoubtedly heard of them (hopefully, in a good way!). Offering 21 kinds of freshly made bagels (yes, 21! Personal favorites are jalapeño cheddar, egg, and tomato basil), 11 kinds of cream cheeses (roasted red pepper & sun-dried tomato at the top of my list), several coffee options, and more, this place has something for everyone (minus my gluten-free friends, sorry about that).

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that they also order hot sandwiches as well (egg, cheese, bacon, the pepperoni special is my recommendation, in case you were wondering). The next time you’re out in the Windham area in the morning or early afternoon, do yourself a favor and stop in to grab a bagel!

Wind Co Trivia🤔

Last week’s answer: 30% of you got the answer right naming Ashford as the Windham County town that Washington stayed the night in at Squire Perkins Tavern, which he found disagreeable.

BUZZWORTHY ACTIVITY🐝

Our friends at Pebble Brook Maple Products (230 Kenyon Rd, Hampton) is holding their annual maple syrup open house this weekend on 3/15 & 3/16, from 11am-4pm each day. You’ll be able to sample some maple syrup and other sweet treats, as well as watch the maple syrup making process (I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a sugar house, but it smells amazing).

If the promise of sticky goodness wasn’t enough, you’ll also get to check out the Scottish Highland cows that are on the farm as well! Take a minute to Google Scottish Highland cows (after you finish the newsletter, of course), and you’ll see why these bovines are udderly impressive (been a while since I’ve dropped a pun like that).

While you’re there, you should chat with Lynn (the matriarch of the family), she’s an absolute gem of a person (I met her by chance while she was cleaning up litter from the side of the road in another town, how nice is that?). You should also probably bring a little money and grab one of their fantastic products! Support a local family and shop local!
