Holiday Markets, Performances Galore, Supporting Good Causes

Good morning, Quiet Corner! Today is Thursday 12/5 and that means it’s National Repeal Day which celebrates the end of prohibition. It’s the perfect excuse for a glass of something this evening. And for my non-drinking friends, you can celebrate Bathtub Party Day! Celebrate by yourself, or invite a friend, I’m not judging!

Before we get started, I have to admit I made a mistake (I’m not perfect, but don’t tell my mom that), I forgot to put the date of the Killingly FFA Shopping Night in Monday’s newsletter (thank you Sarah for pointing it out!). So, for those who are wondering, it is this Friday 12/6 at 5-8pm.

Let’s dive in!

BRIEF BITES

  • WAIM Flea Market - Head to Willimantic (866 Main St) 12/7 from 8am-12pm for WAIM’s final flea market of the year. Find unique, vintage goods, antiques, and who knows what else. It doesn’t cost anything to go take a look!

  • Pet Pictures with Santa - On 12/8, Plainfield Agway (650 Norwich Rd) is inviting all pet lovers to bring their furry (or possibly scaled) friends to come get their pictures taken with the man in the red suit. Stop in between 10am-1pm, enter to win some door prizes, enjoy some refreshments, just please make sure your pets are leashed or crated.

  • Lunch With Santa - Santa has a busy day on 12/8, since he’ll also be at a lunch held by Windham-Tolland 4-H Camp (326 Taft Pond Rd, Pomfret) from 11am-1pm. For $14 (Everyone over 9 years old, $10 for under 9) you get a made-to-order pasta bar, salad, drinks, desserts, holiday crafts, cookies, s’mores, a picture with Santa, and more.

  • CT Town Rankings - In a recent post from WorldAtlas both Willimantic and Putnam made the list of the 7 Most Eccentric Towns in CT! Now that’s something to celebrate, you can see the full write up here.

  • Gvt. Grant: Governor Ned Lamont has approved $20 million in state grants to revitalize 21 blighted properties across Connecticut, including a $200,000 grant for Windham. This funding will assess the 2.46-acre site of the former Kramer Building in Willimantic to explore adaptive reuse options.

  • Plainfield Xmas Tree Lighting - On 12/6 at 5:15pm join the town of Plainfield in their 4th annual tree lighting at the town hall (8 Community Ave). There will be live music, free food (I mean, that’s reason enough to show up), caroling, hay rides, pictures with Santa, fire pits, kid’s crafts, and more.

The Canterbury Sales

Stop into Dr. Helen Baldwin Middle School (45 Westminster Rd, Canterbury) on Saturday 12/7 from 9am-2pm for their Winter Festival. With 50 local artisans, a basket raffle, bake sale, and food truck, there will be plenty to do/eat. And no, you don’t need to understand Middle English to get in (that was for the two Chaucer fans that read this newsletter, if you didn’t get it, google The Canterbury Tales).

What you do need is either $1 or a canned good, which will be donated to Canterbury Cares. So even if you don’t end up buying something, you still did a good deed for the day if you just walk in and browse.

Dollars and AdolesCents

While there hasn’t been a shortage of holiday markets so far this year (with many more to come), this one is a little different. All of the vendors can’t legally drive. That’s right, all the goods come from children entrepreneurs. What better place to search for some gifts for kids, than a place with gifts made by kids?

Ornaments, bookmarks, tea towels, art, slimes (you know your little one would love it), hot chocolate, and pet items are just some of what will be available. Sound like an interesting experience? Head on down to Pomfret Public Library (449 Pomfret St) from 10:30am-1:30pm on Saturday 12/7. It’s suggested that you bring cash in small bills since each vendor will be in charge of their own payments and you know, they’re kids.

Thompson’s Euro-Inspired Outdoor Market

Head to Thompson on Saturday 12/7 from 3-8pm, or more specifically, the Thompson Public Library/Community Center & Duhamel Pond. Why should you head there, you may ask? Well because it’s the 2nd Annual Winter Market and Festival of Trees (which is benefitting the Thompson Senior’s Club this year). Dress warm and pretend like you’re in the Alps doing a little shopping (without having to pay for a plane ticket), if you want to speak with an accent for the day to add to the experience, have at it! We won’t tell anyone you’re not really from Zurich.

Besides the market there will be gingerbread houses, food trucks to keep you fueled up for your shopping, a bonfire, and best of all…horse and carriage rides (could be a pretty good spot for a proposal, just saying…). This is only the second year, so let’s show our Quiet Corner family some love and pop in for a little bit, and make sure this continues to be a tradition.

Ok, so this one I’m a little biased about, since I’ve seen them several times, but Take Note! is holding their Winter Concert on Sunday 12/8 at 3pm at St. Paul Episcopal Church (27 Plains Rd, Windham Center). For those of you who don’t know, Take Note! is a 20-voice acapella ensemble based out of Mansfield (yes, yes, I know, not in Windham County, but close enough and there are several member from Windham County).

Their concert will consist of winter and holiday classics sung in several musical styles including jazz, multicultural, and even keeping it traditional. While there isn’t a ticket to purchase, donations are graciously accepted and will go to benefit Project Imo (a youth development and outdoor education charity). To learn more about Project Imo, check out their website. And if you want to get a taste of Take Note! check out their site which has some footage from previous concerts. If you enjoy acapella music, this should be a no-brainer for you. Hope to see you there!
