Easter Egg-Stravaganzas šŸ°šŸ„š

WindCo History, Plus 33 Events

Good morning, Quiet Corner! Today is Tuesday 4/8, and that means itā€™s National Library Workers Day! In this day and age itā€™s easy to overlook to usefulness of local libraries and their staff, but today is the day to show them some love. Whether itā€™s helping you find exactly what youā€™re looking for, giving you recommendations, planning fantastic (often free) events, or doing even more behind the scenes, itā€™s a great day to say thank you!

In Todayā€™s Quiet Corner Buzz:

  • Easter Egg Hunts

  • WindCo History

  • 33 Events

Last week ran a poll asking about featuring local pets and over 92.96% said ā€œShow me the pets!ā€ If youā€™d like to submit your pet to get featured in upcoming issues please fill out this form.

Letā€™s dive in!

-Tyler DiGiovanni

Iā€™ll start by introducing my furry loved ones Hunter & Ruby. They are both 5 years old, Hunter is Catahoula Leopard Mix and Ruby is a Pitbull. Both dogs are rescues and have no sense of personal space. They'd crawl into your skin if they could.

The grand opening comes with food trucks, DJs, giveaways, and even job interviews on-site. Bonus: UConn students get a 20% ā€œHigher Educationā€ discount ā€” yes, really

  • Award - Madison Newman of Parish Hill High School just earned serious bragging rights, sheā€™s been named the Connecticut 2025 Outstanding Guidance Counselor by the Connecticut PTA.

  • ā€‹Burn - The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is set to conduct controlled burns this spring at Goodwin State Forest in Hampton and Mansfield Hollow State Park in Mansfield. Wind Co TriviašŸ¤”

Which Windham County town was a major stop for stage coaches traveling between Boston and New York City in the late 1700s & 1800s?

Last weekā€™s answer: 60% of you know your stuff, naming alexander Lake the largest natural body of water in Windham County. The lake is roughly covers 215 acres and has a average depth of 25 feet with a max depth of 51 feet!

Gold Rings, Ghost Legends & Generations of Nells:
The Wild Origins of Alexanderā€™s Lake

Letā€™s dive into the answer of last weekā€™s trivia question: Alexanderā€™s Lake. Itā€™s about a mile long, half a mile wide, and full of stories. Today, we call it Alexanderā€™s Lake, but the original locals (weā€™re talking pre-colonial) knew it as Mashapaug, which loosely translates to ā€œlarge pond.ā€ Big Pond Energy, basically.

Now letā€™s talk about the guy behind the name: Nell Alexander. No, thatā€™s not a typo. ā€œNellā€ was his name ā€” and apparently, it ran in the family like an heirloom. But before Nell became a Killingly land baron, he was just a Scottish immigrant with hustle in his blood and a lucky break in his pocket.

Hereā€™s how the legend goes: Nell was fresh off the boat (literally ā€” he landed in Boston around 1720) when he stumbled across a gold ring lying on deck. No one claimed it. So what did he do? He pawned it, bought some trade goods, and started peddling his wares up and down Boston and Roxbury. The guy basically invented the side hustle. Within a few years, he made enough money to buy 3,500 acres in Killingly, including a lovely piece of land with a scenic little lake.

That gold ring? It became a sort of family talisman, passed down from Nell to Nell to Nell ā€” reportedly still in the family today, like some kind of Yankee Lord of the Rings situation. The original Nell allegedly said it should stay in the family ā€œuntil the last knell of the race is tolled,ā€ which is equal parts poetic and dramatic.

But wait ā€” this lake isnā€™t just about colonial grit and generational jewelry. Thereā€™s also a legend straight out of a supernatural horror film, courtesy of the areaā€™s original Native inhabitants. According to tradition, the land where the lake now rests used to be a pine-covered mountain, and it was the go-to spot for a legendary multi-day powwow ā€” think ancient music festival, complete with dancing, feasting, and storytelling. But the Great Spirit? Not a fan of the debauchery. Mid-festival, the ground gave way and the entire mountain collapsed, swallowed by a sudden surge of water that came from below. Everyone was lost... except one elder woman who survived on a lone peak that now sits in the lake, known today as Loonā€™s Island.

So whether you believe in real estate legends or divine mountain sinkholes, Alexanderā€™s Lake delivers on both fronts: part myth, part entrepreneurship, and all Connecticut charm.
