31st Country Antiques Show, Windham County History, 30+ Events
Good morning, Quiet Corner! Today is Tuesday 3/25, and that means itās National Tolkien Reading Day! That means itās a great day to actually read Lord of The Rings, and not just watch the movies. Although, if youāve watched them with the subtitles on, I guess that still kinda counts, right? Anyway, hereās whatās going on in Windham County (and a little outside of it) this week.

BRIEF BITES
Affordable Living - A recent study looked at house prices in CT to find the 25 most affordable towns and a few from Windham County made the list including Plainfield, Windham, & Willimantic. Check out the full list here.
Top Coach - Windham girls basketball coach Robert Mangual earned Eastern Connecticut Coach of the Year honors, celebrating a stellar 25-2 season that put Windham atop the Class M rankings. Mangual's squad proved that heart and hustle can outplay height any day, making Windham a force to reckon with statewide. This is Mangualās second year bringing the Lady Whips to the championship game.
For Sale - The much beloved Soleil Bakery in Woodstock has recently been put up for sale. We hope the future owners will continue the tradition of putting out the best baked goods, and generally being awesome people just like Bill is!

THE HIVEāS PICK

This weekend weāre celebrating all things maple at the Eastern CT Maple Festival on Saturday (3/29) & Sunday (3/30) from 10am-4pm both days, taking place at E.O. Smith High School (1235 Storrs Rd, Storrs).
Alright, so this one isnāt technically in Windham County, but since itās being organized by our good friends at the Windham Region Chamber of Commerce, I wanted to include it. Also, Iāll be there all weekend, so itās a great chance to come say hi (and take advantage of some of the discounts Iāve worked out with some vendors)!
There will be dozens of vendors (hereās the list), all sorts of maple goodies (I donāt care what the weather is like, Iām getting a maple shake), live music, and plenty of free activities for little ones.
This is promising to be an absolutely wonderful couple of days, and itās worth the drive to see how much UConn has changed if you havenāt been there in a few years.

Wind Co Triviaš¤
Who was considered to be the first settler of Windham County? |
Last weekās answer: The Brooklyn Fair is the oldest agricultural fair in the US which began in 1809! 24.4% of you got the answer correct.

BUZZWORTHY ACTIVITYš
If you havenāt noticed by now, we love history (especially, but not limited to this area). Thatās why this weekās Buzzworthy Activity is the 31st Country Antiques Show at Ellis Tech (613 Upper Maple St, Danielson) on Saturday 3/29 from 10am-3pm.
More than 50 dealers are bringing goods from the past, from all over New England (and even further away than that!) for you to peruse. If you love all things that go way beyond retro, this would be a great stop this weekend. You can find more info here.

Courthouse Hustle:
How Brooklyn Snagged (and Lost) Windham Countyās Top Spot

Alright, Brooklyn friends, let's rewind to 1819 when the town pulled off a pretty sweet deal. The Connecticut General Assembly basically said, "Hey, build us a courthouse and jailāwithout spending a dime of county moneyāand we'll move the Windham County seat right to Brooklyn." Challenge accepted! By 1819, the buildings were up, and boomāBrooklyn officially stole the spotlight from Windham. Gotta love that entrepreneurial spirit!
Fast forward to 1960, and Connecticut decided counties were just extra baggage, ditching county governments altogether, leaving Brooklyn without its official "seat" title. But hey, you had a solid 141-year run, and even seatless, Brooklyn still rocks its historic bragging rightsācounty seat or not!

Hivelight: Windham County Property

Welcome to the Ann Hall House, a Pomfret stunner on the National Register of Historic Places and former abode of renowned miniaturist painter Ann Hall. Sitting pretty on 9+ acres, this historic gem flawlessly blends period charm with next-level upgrades: think Ann Sacks tiles, designer hardware, refinished hardwood floors, and thermopane windows with slick Emtek hardware. The owners went all-inādown to the original chestnut studs and insulated outer walls.
Outside, elegant pillars welcome you home, while inside, the revamped layout boasts extra rooms finished in the attic, adding two bedrooms and another full bath (town records say 4 beds, 2.5 bathsāit's even better IRL). Bonus points for a renovated barn-style guest space, decked out with granite counters, central air, and modern fixtures.
Historic style, modern vibesāyour dream Connecticut home is here.
