Let The Good Times Roll
Coming Together As a Community, A Little Beautification Day, Local Legend Book Launch
Good morning, Quiet Corner! Today is Thursday 1/9, and that means it’s National Static Electricity Day (yes, really). That means it’s the perfect day to wear your fuzziest socks, shuffle across that carpet, and give your favorite person a little shock. And if they ask, “What are you doing!?”, you can just say you were just checking to see if the spark was still there. Or you can always do the classic balloon-hair trick (you know the one). It’s your day, celebrate how ever you’d like.

BRIEF BITES
New Restaurant - Blackstone Putnam located at 35 Main St. is running a soft opening with plans on full hours soon. The restaurant also has a location in Coventry, RI and is known for specializing in tapas style “flights” of boutique food and drinks. So far the reviews look good on their FB page, you can find it here.
Zip Codes - Following up on a previous story about mail mishaps in Quiet Corner. Our reader Rachel C. let us know that NPR’s Podcast Planet Money spoke about the history of zip codes and featured Scotland, CT. The section about Scotland begins at 20:55 mark, you can find the whole podcast here. Thanks Rachel!
Energy Project - A $200 million battery energy storage project, the Windham Energy Center, could help boost Connecticut's access to carbon-free power but is currently facing legal hurdles. Located on a 63 acre undeveloped acre site in Killingly, the proposed 325-megawatt facility aims to store surplus energy from offshore wind but is tied up by a 2019 certificate for a canceled natural gas plant. While developers push for approval, concerns about fire safety at battery storage sites are being addressed. The Connecticut Sitting Council is set to review the motion at its meeting on February 6.
Water Flushing - From January 15-17th Sterling residents that are using public water may see some water discoloration and sediment due to a water system flush.
Benefit Dinner 🍽️
This Saturday (1/11), the Killingly Little League is holding a benefit dinner at the Elk’s Club of Danielson (13 Center St) from 4-8pm. After their 2024 Spring season, one of their players (Chayse Masse) was diagnosed with B-ALL Leukemia. Killingly Little League wants to help show their support and let the Masse family know they’re not going through this alone.
The menu for the dinner is pasta & meatballs, chicken parm, eggplant, manicotti, and salad (don’t worry, when it’s for a good cause, the calories don’t count). There will also be a cash bar available, if you so feel inclined. Ticket sales will go toward helping pay for treatment for Chayse.
If you want to grab a plate to go, you can. If you’d like to stay and chat, you’re more than welcome. If you can’t attend, but would still like to donate, there an option for that as well. You can purchase tickets here. Let’s show the Masse family how Windham County helps take care of its own.
If you want more information, or are interested in donating raffle items, you can contact Liz Baker at [email protected].
New Year, New You 💅

Smoke & Mirrors Beauty Loft (171 Providence St, Putnam) is holding a special event to kick off the new year on Sunday (1/12) starting at 11am and going until 3pm. There will be a guest bartender, Jenna from Beyond The Pour Inc, a Somatic healing session at 11:30am, a Reiki meditation session at 1:30pm, music, non-alcoholic refreshments (but let’s be honest, for most of us, a nice glass of something really sends that pedi over the edge), and highly discounted services/retail products.
Tickets to this event are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. If you want to pre-purchase, you’ll have to VENMO @smokeandmirrors_jones. And if you are planning on going, I’d book sooner than later. The first 10 people to buy their tickets will get complimentary drinks. You can browse all their available services here. Walk-ins are welcome, but the ladies at Smoke & Mirrors suggest making an appointment, since it’s first come, first served.
Canterbury Book Launch 📚
If you’ve been getting our newsletter, you might remember we had our Hive Pick be the Prudence Crandall Museum (1 South Canterbury Rd) in Canterbury. Well on Sunday (1/12) at 1pm, the museum is hosting Dr. Jennifer Rycenga and the launch of her book Schooling the Nation: The Success of the Canterbury Academy for Black Women.
You’ll get a chance to chat with Dr. Rycenga, get a signed copy of the book (a book purchase isn’t necessary to attend the event), some light refreshments, as well as access to the museum exhibit. Rycenga will also give a short talk about the school and its place in American racial and gender history.
As I mentioned before, the event is free, but pre-registering is required due to space being limited. You can select if you’d like to attend with or without a paid book pre-order option here.

THE HIVE’S PICK
Today’s Hive Pick goes to Good Times Coffee House (1548 Main St, Willimantic). This coffee shop opened in late October of last year, and I haven’t anything but good things about them. They roast their own coffee, make the dough for their cinnamon rolls in-house (they are unbelievably good. No, seriously. It’s worth making a trip just for them), source some bread from Little River Bread (from Danielson), are bringing on a professional pastry chef in the next few weeks, and make as much in-house as possible.
The atmosphere is inviting, and the owner (Brandon) is truly passionate about the quality of the products he puts forward. They are open 7am-5pm every day, so you don’t need to be an early bird to catch a worm. Although, you might miss out on a cinnamon roll if you go too late (they are a local favorite, once you have one, you’ll understand). Next time you need to head to the DMV, you can at least look forward to stopping in here (it’s right across the street).
