Treats For Troops, Early Holiday Shopping, Drought Alert
Good morning, Quiet Corner! Today is Veteran’s Day, so make sure to say thanks to anyone you know who served.
Fun fact: On June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American Veterans of all wars. Today there’s an estimated 18 million Veterans in America which is ~6% of the population.

BRIEF BITES
Playdates for Kids: Looking to find some other parents with children 4 and under? Check out the playgroup at Ashford School every Friday from 8:30-10:00am. Registration isn’t necessary, just sign in at the front desk and let your children participate in some fun and engaging activities. Much better alternative than listening to the same Cocomelon songs on repeat! 🧒
Get Movin: Start sweating it out with other people who like to pick things up and put them down. 4 Keys CrossFit in Windham had its grand opening and is ready to help you hit those WODs. Not sold on going all out on a membership? You can always drop in for a $20 class to try it out before committing. 🏋️
Plants Galore: Now that most of the leaves are are the ground, bring a little greenery back into your life. Make sure to drop into Hart’s Greenhouse and Florist at their Brooklyn and Canterbury locations before they close for the season on 11/15! Get 50% off all remaining trees, shrubs, Hart’s mums, fall accent plants, and Spring flowering bulbs (houseplants are also 50% off in Brooklyn)! 🪴
🚧Traffic Alert in Thompson🚧: Blain Road will be closed near the train tracks on 11/13-11/14. Detours will be set up, but homes and businesses on both sides of construction will still be accessible.

Treats For Troops
A couple of community members in Union have partnered with Soldier’s Angels to help you get rid of your Halloween candy for a great cause. Giving soldiers abroad and VA patients a little sugar rush and a taste of home.
Organized by Avonlea and Branson Forziati, you can drop off your donations in the labeled bin inside the front doors of the Union Town Hall. Don’t wait too long, though, donations are only being accepted until 11/20.
To make other arrangements, you can also contact Erin Kate Grabel-Forziati via phone (860-798-3357) or email ([email protected])
Get Your Holiday Shopping Done Early
Little Dipper Farm
Join Little Dipper Farm for its 2nd annual Holiday Market on 11/16 and 11/17 from 10am-4pm, held inside its barn in Brooklyn. Browse through 30 different vendors, including artisans, crafters, and makers. If that isn’t enough to pique your interest, come out to enjoy some live music and snack on some of the food that will be available and wash it down with a delicious craft cocktail.
Why not make a day of it and take advantage of the hiking trails, take a rest in the hammock garden, or take advantage of some of the outdoor games that will be set up? Looking forward to seeing you there (I’m a sucker for nutcrackers)!
It’s Dry Out There
Governor Lamont has declared a Stage 2 drought advisory, as the state faces the driest two-month stretch since 1905. Between 40-50 fire fighters were battling a brush fire in Putnam Valley over the weekend.
With fire risks high and water levels dipping, officials are encouraging residents to conserve water. That means you should probably fix those leaky pipes and stop taking 2-hour showers. Pay attention to your local guidelines to make sure you don’t run your well dry. Also, you should probably tell that one neighbor, you know the one, to stop watering their grass.
Don’t forget that a burn ban is still in effect, so maybe think about doing those s’mores in the microwave instead of over a fire pit. And smokers, don’t ditch your butts outside your car window! Think about having a bottle in your car with a little water in it to extinguish your smokes when you’re done with them.

The new store, located at 1589 West Main Street in Willimantic, officially opened on Wednesday and is open 9am-9pm Monday-Saturday and 10am-7pm on Sundays.
The retail giant, known as America’s largest retailer of closeout merchandise and excess inventory, announced during the summer it would be moving to the plaza shared with BJ’s.
The lease was signed for the 31,240-square-foot space, which was formerly occupied by Ocean State Job Lot, in July. Ocean State Job Lot moved down the street to the former Price Rite in 2021.
Thanks for taking the time to read the Quiet Corner Buzz! Make sure to share with someone who already had their holiday decorations up the day after Halloween.
