Women's Leadership Council, Trying Out Tarot, Killingly Robotics Competition
Good morning, Quiet Corner! Today is Monday 1/6, and that means it’s my brother Kiel’s Birthday! It also means it’s National Cuddle Up Day. It’s the perfect time to grab your favorite blanket, stuffed animal, real animal, loved one, hated one, or everything in between and give it a good old iron-grip snuggle session. They say that snuggling releases endorphins and oxytocin (basically, they make you feel all warm and fuzzy), so grab your snuggle-buddy of choice and check out what’s going on in Windham County this week.

Women’s Leadership Council 👩‍💼
The Windham Region Chamber of Commerce is holding their monthly Women’s Leadership Council on Thursday 1/9 at 12-1pm. This is a “lunch and learn,” so you can bring food, or purchase a meal from the Chamber of Commerce for $10 (usually a wrap, chips, and drink).
In this meeting, you’ll hear from women business owners, entrepreneurs, employers, managers, and community leaders, to learn about best practices, overcoming barriers, insight into growing a business, and more. You’ll also hear about Chamber upcoming events/programs and even touch on some state and federal legislative agendas.
If you’re a woman who is looking to start a business, or want some tips on how to get your existing business to the next level, it would be worth dropping in to hear what everyone has to say. Oh, and if you want the lunch they provide, you can pre-buy it here (it also will give them an idea of how much they should have, so they don’t over or under buy. See, you’re already getting some great tips!).
The Art of Tarot 🎴
Ever get the urge to dabble in something…otherworldly? Pomfret Library (449 Pomfret St, Pomfret) is hosting a four-part class to get you going with the basics of Tarot. No, you don’t need to practice witchcraft or own a black cat (although, no one is saying you can’t have those, just not a necessity), you just need an open mind.
This class is going to be taught by Aubrey Waz-Grant and will help you explore Tarot for a means of personal insight, self-reflection, and creativity. Classes will be held on 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, and 1/29. It’s highly recommended to attend each class, since they’ll build on each other. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, you can register here. Space is limited, so I would jump on it sooner than later if you’re into it.
Killingly Robotic Qualifier 🤖
So this is a little (a lot) different than events I normally put on here, but I think it’s definitely justified in getting a shout-out. Killingly Robotics is hosting the 3rd Annual Killingly Robotics State Championship qualifier this Saturday 1/11 from 7am-5pm (long day for sure) at Killingly High School (226 Putnam Pike, Dayville). Whoever wins at this competition will have a chance to compete at the CT State Championship, which is another stepping stone to get to the World Robotics Championship (which, in my opinion, is pretty cool).
So, where do you come in, in all of this? They need volunteers! It takes nearly 100 volunteers to make sure the event runs smoothly for teams from all around the state. Also, if your teen needs some community service hours, this is a great way to run up some time. Killingly has had some fantastic teams in the past, even bringing home a National Title in 2023!
If you want to know a little more about the event/volunteering, you can check out this page. If you’ve heard enough and want to volunteer your time this Saturday, you can fill out the volunteer form here.

Now that things have cooled from the extremely mild Fall we had, you might be looking at ways of staying warm. While sitting by a fireplace will do the job, sometimes you want a little extra scenery, like, say, some tropical plants? I think you know where I’m going with this.
Logee’s Plants for Home and Garden (14 Central St, Danielson) is an amazing place to stay warm (their greenhouses are downright balmy) and check out some really neat plants that have no business existing in New England during the winter. The staff is knowledgeable (shout-out to Michael Jordan for helping me out. No, not that MJ) and the plant selection is vast (I always like to check out the sales section of their website before I head down).
It’s a great way boost your spirits on a dreary day. Something about seeing citrus hanging off a tree (no, you can’t pick it, trust me, I ask every time), or smelling a new kind of mint in the herb house (one smells like an Andes candy), makes my winter blues disappear. Fair warning though, they are not cheap! But, it doesn’t cost anything to walk around and look! They are open Wednesday-Sunday 9am-4:30pm.
