Booked on a Feeling šŸ“š

A Classic Rock Concert, Painting Classes, & We Want To Hear From You!

Good morning, Quiet Corner! Today is Thursday 1/16, and that means itā€™s National Get To Know Your Customers Day (itā€™s a real thing, for every third Thursday of each quarter). Although you arenā€™t really ā€œcustomersā€, since you arenā€™t buying anything from us, in the spirit of trying to get to know you, weā€™re asking that you take 60 seconds to fill out a brief survey (I know, I know, but itā€™s to help make the newsletter even better!).

The survey will help give us an idea of what weā€™re doing right, what we need to improve on, and what everyone is interested in hearing about! Itā€™s pretty short (5 questions, almost all multiple choice) and would be much appreciated!

Now, letā€™s get to whatā€™s going on this weekend in Windham County.

In Todayā€™s Quiet Corner Buzz:

  • Fleetwoodā€™s Back šŸŽµ

  • Painting Is For The Birds šŸ¦

  • Paint and Sip šŸ–Œļø

Letā€™s dive in!

-Tyler DiGiovanni

BRIEF BITES

  • Big Donation - Robin Murray, a generous woman from Columbia, has once again made headlines with her annual $5,000 donation to Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic.

  • Info Session - Scotland residents will have the chance to learn about plans to replace another bridge in town. Several bridges were damaged or washed away during heavy rainstorms that caused Merrick Brook to reach flood stage in the fall of 2023. You can find more info here.

  • Environmental Report - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has completed its five-year review of the Linemaster Switch Corp. Superfund site in Woodstock, Conn. This review ensures that the cleanup continues to protect public health and the environment, with follow-up actions recommended where necessary. You can find the results here.

  • Local Talent - Jacob Irons from Plainfield will be calling the national championship game for Notre Dameā€™s student radio. What began with a simple microphone at his sisterā€™s softball games has turned into a remarkable journey through sports journalism.

Fleetwoodā€™s Back šŸŽµ

Weā€™ve heard some Rumours (itā€™ll make sense in a second, just stick with me) that the popular Fleetwood Mac cover band Tusk: The Classic Fleetwood Mac Tribute is making an appearance at the Loos Center For The Arts (150 Route 169, Woodstock) on Saturday 1/18 at 7pm. Throw the address in your GPS, otherwise you can Go Your Own Way and enjoy an evening of Fleetwood Macā€™s greatest hits.

Since the real deal isnā€™t touring anymore, this might be the only place to catch a live Fleetwood Mac show that isnā€™t a YouTube recording, or taking place in your Dreams (ok, that was the last one, but these are fun!). I did check out some YouTube videos of them before putting this on here, and Kathy Phillips does an unbelievable job of sounding like Stevie Nicks (even brings out the shawls, and hits some classic Stevie moves).

Tickets are somewhat limited at this point, but given the somewhat intimate nature of the venue, thereā€™s not really a bad seat in the house. So, get ready to be trapped in a Landslide of music (how could I not put that one in?) and have a great evening out!

Painting is For The Birds šŸ¦

Looking to flex your creative muscles? Or maybe you just want to prove to yourself that you know how to hold the right end of a paint brush? Whatever your skill level is, youā€™re invited to join PaintWithPammy at the Franco-American Civic and Social Club (116 Club Rd, North Windham) on Saturday 1/18 from 3-6pm for a day of painting fun.

Youā€™ll be painting a red cardinal perched on a birdhouse (it looks nicer than Iā€™m describing, and you can see a preview on the website link above). The painting is on a 14ā€x14ā€ canvas, which is provided, along with all the supplies to create your avian masterpiece. All of this will cost about $30 per painter.

Youā€™re welcome to bring snacks, but outside drinks are not allowed (the club has a full bar with really good drink prices). You can book your spot by visiting the website above, calling Pam at (860)710-5902, or emailing her at [email protected]. Walk-ins are welcome, but you should call ahead to make sure spots are available!

Paint and Sip šŸ–Œļø

Itā€™s looking like Saturday 1/18 is the day of putting paint on canvas. Block 134 (134 Main St, Putnam) is holding their first annual Paint and Sip lead by Lake View Studioā€™s Sherrie Parenteau. Unlike the painting class above, the evening will be a BYOB event, so bring whatever your favorite beverage of choice is and get ready to bring your painting skills to the next level.

The evening will cost $35 per person, and will cover everything you need to demonstrate your artistic prowess. Oh, also that will cover the snacks that theyā€™ll have on hand (I canā€™t believe I almost forgot about the snacks!). As of now, the painting will be a snowy scene with a red barn, but that may change.

If youā€™re interested in participating in this inaugural event, you can Venmo Block134 $35 with the description ā€œPaint Night with Sherrieā€ and your first and last name. If you have more questions, you can email [email protected].

THE HIVEā€™S PICK

Image Courtesy of Pourings and Passages Facebook

Todayā€™s Hive Pick is going to Pourings and Passages (103 Main St, Danielson). If youā€™ve been on the Quiet Corner Buzz Facebook page, you mightā€™ve seen my post when I stopped in. I wanted to make sure to give another spotlight on this place, because it is that awesome! The owner, Jimmy, is happy to answer any questions you may have about the store, and just have a friendly chat (he is a super-personable guy!).

Iā€™m getting ahead of myself though. For those of you who are not familiar with Pourings and Passages, itā€™s a used book store at first glance. But after being greeted by the lovely volunteers who work there, youā€™ll see it goes beyond that. There are crafts and items from local artisans that can be purchased, a coffee bar, and plenty of places to sit and do a little reading. When I say plenty of space, I mean plenty of space. The store is 8,000sqft!

Each room is broken up by genre, so itā€™s easy to find a book that might fit your tastes. And they arenā€™t struggling to fill the shelves, with over 20,000 books in the store at any given time. Since the business is a non-profit, the proceeds from the book sales go to St. James School in Danielson.

If youā€™re a book lover, this is a must-visit location!
