Getting Creative With Your Hands, WindCo History, Plus 35 Events
Good morning, Quiet Corner! Today is Tuesday 4/1, and that mean it’s a certain day full of tomfoolery, hijinks, capers, tricks, buffoonery, skylarking (that was a new term for me), shenanigans, or whatever else you’d like to call it.
It’s also National Sourdough Bread Day, so that means it’s time to call in a favor to that friend you have that treats their starter like a child (most likely they started baking during the pandemic and never stopped). Also, I’m always happy to take donations of sourdough baked goods 😊. Who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll have a QCB sourdough bake off (I’ll make the sacrifice of being a judge. I know, how brave of me, right?). Anyway, here’s what’s going on in Windham County this week.

Let’s dive in!

Wanna see a local furry friend featured in the newsletter? We’re thinking of adding a regular spotlight on a standout pet from Windham County—could be a heroic hound, a grumpy cat, or even a llama with attitude. 🐾 Should we do it? |

BRIEF BITES
For Sale - A staple in the Willimantic community, The Bench Shop, is up for sale after 55 years of being in business.
Youth Grants - The Community Table/Mesa Comunitaria Foodshare, sponsored by Commercially Licensed Cooperative Kitchen, Inc., is set to benefit from Connecticut's recent initiative, which awarded approximately $38,787 in grants to support five youth-led service projects across the state.
Trout - Spring fishing season is officially on in Connecticut! The DEEP has already stocked 145,000 trout across state waters, with a whopping 500,000 planned by May. Grab your gear—those fish won’t catch themselves! Check out the stocking map here.

THE HIVE CHARITY

If you’ve been a reader of the QCB for a while, you know we love supporting local businesses, but a lot of times places doing important work get passed over, so we want to spotlight some of the unsung heroes of the community.
Today’s pick goes to Project IMO Inc. (924 Riverside Dr, Willimantic). If you’re not familiar with the work they do, in a nutshell, they focus on empowering youth and communities through immersive adventure-based education (if you think that sounds too polished to be my writing, you’re absolutely correct, I took it directly from their website🤷).
The amount of programs they offer is way too long to write about in the newsletter, but the work they do with youth in the community warrants a shout out. I highly recommend you check out their website to really see what they’re all about (the Idea Forge is something I wish we had when I was growing up).

Wind Co Trivia🤔
What's the biggest natural body of water in Windham County? |
Last week’s answer: 26.6% of you guessed correct with John Cates being the first settler in Windham County. Cates settled in the area of present-day Windham around 1689, marking the beginning of permanent European settlement in Windham County.

BUZZWORTHY ACTIVITY🐝
This week’s Buzzworthy Activity is going to take you out to Thompson for a creative, earthen pottery class at Bearfoot Farm (1038 Riverside Dr, Thompson) on Sunday 4/6, from 1-3pm.
Tap into your inner ceramicist and craft a unique creation that you can be proud to show off (or hide, or if you really flub it, give it to someone as a gift knowing they can’t say no). Get a little guidance to make a gnome, magical rune set, or finger labyrinth.
Space is limited, so register sooner than later!

The Forgotten Founder:
How Jo Ginne Helped Build Windham Brick by Brick

Way before Thread City had, well, thread—or roads, or buildings, or literally anything—John Cates rolled into the wilds of what’s now Windham around 1688 and said, “Yeah, I’ll settle here.” But he didn’t do it alone. With him was Jo Ginne, an enslaved African man whose name somehow got buried under centuries of history books... even though he helped build Windham from scratch.
Jo wasn’t just tagging along—he was the backbone of the whole operation. The dude dug out a cave or cellar so they wouldn’t freeze that first brutal winter, and come spring, he helped build the first actual house in the entire area. No easy feat when you’re surrounded by woods, wild animals, and no YouTube tutorials. Oh, and when they weren’t building? Jo was trapping and hunting to keep them alive. Basically, he was the first survivalist of Windham County.
When Cates died in 1697, Jo was passed—like property—to Rev. Samuel Whiting, Windham’s minister. It’s a rough reminder that Jo’s story is wrapped up in the harsh reality of slavery in early New England. But here’s the thing: while John Cates gets the plaque and the founder title, it’s Jo Ginne who deserves equal billing. Windham wasn’t built by one man—it was built by two. One’s story is in the history books. The other? We’re just now starting to tell it.
